What is Local Hack Day: Build 2022?

Local Hack Day: Build is your opportunity to spend a week focused on creating and developing the projects you’ve always wanted to tackle. In accepting this quest, you are in for an adventure featuring workshops, fun mini-events, challenges, panels, and more. These will help you to earn experience points no matter what level of hacking you are at, whether it’s writing your first lines of code or creating a multi-faceted project.

We will be bringing back all of your favorite features from Local Hack Day Learn, Build, and Share 2021 like challenges, live technical sessions with MLHers, mini-events galore, and some cool content from our partners! Here’s a sneak peek:

What is a Guild? How can I be a part of it?

One of the best parts of our community is that it allows people to meet and make connections with others, regardless of where you live. guilds are smaller communities within Major League Hacking. Whether you come in with a guild or not, you won’t be hacking alone.

Who organized Local Hack Day?

Local Hack Day is organized by Major League Hacking (MLH). It is our mission to empower hackers worldwide by providing them with the tools, resources, and opportunities they need to succeed.

Your challenge submission must be completed within the submission period.

When relevent, your code must be available in some sort of public repository.

If you're continuing work on an old project, you MUST specify in your Devpost what was worked on 1) before this day one of Local Hack Day: Build 2022 and 2) during day day of Local Hack Day: Build 2022.

Implement a cipher

Yesterday, we had to encrypt a password. Today, we want you to learn how to use a cipher. You can write code for one or even learn about pen and paper ciphers! Share it with us on the Day 4 Devpost.

Build a Translator

The hacker community is incredibly diverse, so we’d love to see you create something to aid communication around the world. Build an application to help translate between languages - you could translate sign language or spoken languages! Submit your hack on our Day 4 Devpost!

Create a hack that uses a queueing system

Create a hack that involves a queueing system! It could be a chat application that puts people in line to talk with one person, an application to manage video doctor visits, or any other online “line” that you can think of. You don’t need to wait in line to submit on the Day 4 Devpost.

Build a twitter bot

Need to keep up with twitter when you’re offline? Create a twitter bot! Don’t tweet it at us though, submit it on the Day 4 Devpost.

Create a Web Scraping Application that helps your Community

We know hackers always want to learn web scraping at hackathons, so we want to encourage you to explore this subject during LHD. Your project could scrape class data to help students plan their course schedule, look into grocery store prices to compile the best sales, or anything else that you can share with your community to help others out. Build an online auction system

Create a way to run an auction online - think about managing bids and items, and how you’ll notify winners. Going once, going twice! Sold to the Day 4 Devpost.

Build a Recipe tracker

Find a way to keep track of recipes you’ve made, want to make, or even have created yourself! The recipe for a perfect submission is on the Day 4 Devpost.

Ever wanted to make an AI-based project but didn’t know how to get started? MATLAB is a great tool for AI modeling and can be used to build things like a movie recommendation system for instance. Add a Readme to a Project You Have on GitHub

You could have the greatest code in the world but if your project repo is missing a detailed readme, would-be users are unlikely to demo your application. We want you to write and commit a readme to any of your GitHub projects, explaining what your code does, how you came up with the idea and instructions for use. Remember to submit your work to our day-of Devpost!
